Giving blood provides an essential lifeline to those in need. Multiple blood types are low in stock in the Geneva region. Currently four out of five people will need blood once in their life. Presently only 2.5% of the Swiss population give their blood. Giving blood the first time can be scary and raise many questions. Let's experience this moment together before celebrating with a restorative and delicious brunch in one of Geneva's pastry kingdom!

Can I give blood?

To be allowed to give blood at the HUG, you need to be aged between 18 and 60 years old and weight more than 50 kg / 110 pounds. Before your first donation, a short confidential interview will take place in order to consider your overall health. Conditions that might lead to a refusal are:

  • Positive test to AIDS, Hepatitis B or C, Syphilis
  • Sexual activity with a partner exposed to risk-inducing situations
  • Past or present drug take via injection
  • Stay in the United Kingdom between 1980 and 1996 for more than 6 months
  • Having received a blood transfusion since 1980
  • Tattoos or piercing in the 4 previous months

What happens at the blood donation (45min)?

  1. You will be asked to fill a short confidential questionnaire (5min)
  2. You will be asked to provide an identity document and your personal file will be created (5min)
  3. You will be shown the informative video above (8min)
  4. A drop of blood from your blood will be analyzed to dismiss any anaemia risk (5min)
  5. A nurse will discuss your potential for blood donation (confidential, 10min)
  6. A nurse will collect 450ml of your blood (do not worry, you have ten times more remaining and will recover the quantity in the following days)
  7. You are invited to enjoy some drinks and snacks while recovering some energy (15min)

How do I prepare for my donation?

  • Avoid eating a heavy meal (like fondue) the day before
  • Avoid drinking alcohol the day before
  • Avoid heavy workouts the day before (48h for climbing, scuba diving and competitions)
  • Dress practical (foldable sleeves / sleeveless / no white fabric)
  • Do eat and drink liquids before coming for the blood donation!

What do I need to observe after the donation?

  • Eating and drink in quantity (we have the brunch just for that!)
